The emergence of DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) startup, has sent shockwaves through North America, affecting industries ranging from technology to finance and geopolitics. Despite its relatively small size, DeepSeek has managed to rival AI giants like OpenAI and Meta while disrupting Nvidia’s stronghold on the AI hardware market. The outcome of its breakthrough extends beyond the AI industry, raising critical questions about U.S. competitiveness, investment strategies, and the effectiveness of AI-related export controls.

DeepSeek’s ascent follows the classic pattern of disruptive innovation.
