Nowadays, as technological research trending, nanotechnology have become a well observed topic. Even though people always hear the word, but not many know the meaning behind it. Nanotechnology involves the manipulation of matter at an almost atomic level to create novel structures, materials, and devices (Nanotechnology, 2020). The technology has the potential to make scientific developments in many sectors, including medicine, products, energy, manufacturing, and material (Nanotechnology, 2020). As nanomaterial have a size between 1 and 100 nanometers, it is easy for the material to show unique properties that affect physical, chemical, and biological behaviour (Nanotechnology, 2020). Many clothes will use nanomaterial and nanotechnology to develop benefiting features, including waterproof and microbicidal.

Nanotechnology has made waterproof clothes possible. If people soak their raincoat in water for a long period, it will be wet eventually. However, the development of nanotechnology contributed to completely waterproof clothing. When making a waterproof cloth, silica nanoparticles are used to create a coating on fabric that repels water and stain-causing liquids (Cave, 2014).  The unique properties of the silica coating, including its angle and roughness, generate enough surface tension to cause liquids to form beads and slide off the fabric instead of being absorbed (Cave, 2014). To generalize, silica in the fabric or on its surface forms a shield that protects the clothes from stained liquid and water, and the roughness of the particle allow the shield to make liquid beads to roll off the clothes (Hausse, 2021). Thus, clothing industries can use the new nanoparticles to create fully waterproof and stain resist layers on clothes.

Microbicidal feature is another enhancement to clothing industries. Silver nanoparticles discharge positive ions, which help maintain the proper functioning of bacterial cells (Smith, 202). Due to their small size, these particles can be incorporated into textiles without affecting their feel or performance (Smith, 2020). Additionally, the silver nanoparticles are resistant to odors, allowing clothes containing them to require less frequent washing (Smith, 2020). Clothing incorporates silver nanoparticles for their potent antimicrobial properties, capable of eliminating bacteria and fungi and preventing the unpleasant odors they generate (Cave, 2014). The minute size of these particles ensures that the garment remains comfortable and wearable without compromising its softness (Cave, 2014). Hence, the special properties of nanoparticles have contributed to the development of clothing.

In conclusion, scientists have recognized the unique properties of nanoparticles and applied them in various areas, including clothing materials. These nanoparticles are used to create completely waterproof and microbicidal clothes. By incorporating silica nanoparticles into garments, a thick layer is formed that repels water. Additionally, silver nanoparticles can be added to clothes to eliminate microbes and combat unpleasant odors. The clothing industry also utilizes nanoparticles for sun-blocking and antistatic purposes. However, despite the numerous advantages of nanoparticles, they still pose potential health risks. Therefore, scientists continue to study the features of nanoparticles, considering both their benefits and drawbacks. Overall, nanotechnology remains an ongoing and promising field for the future.
